Cristina Cilloniz

Botanical artist and illustrator Cristina Cilloniz unites two passions in her illustrated projects: nature and watercolors. She discovered the technique of negative watercolor painting through her constant search for new ways to recreate the beauty of plants and flowers, among other elements. This technique has enabled her to create a feeling of depth through the build-up of layers, and create illustrations that seem to jut out of the page, by giving special attention to the background in her compositions.

In this course, you will learn how to use the negative watercolor technique, with the use of natural elements. Starting from the initial creative illustration process, learn how to create a mood board, a color palette, and useful exercises to warm up the hand, until you have learned all you need to create your finished project.

Cristina Colloniz starts off by telling you about her career so far, from how she began botanical painting, to her latest projects. Discover her most valued artistic influences and a selection of her favorite negative watercolor illustrations.

Get familiar with the materials you will work with, and find out what Cristina recommends to fill your watercolor illustrations with life. Learn how each type of paintbrush is used, and discover how to combine watercolors, inks, paper, and more, before moving on to the best way to organize your workspace to work comfortably.

Discover Cristina’s creative process; from the selection of references to the creation of a color palette, so that your final project is in harmony with what you want to portray.
Learn color theory and other concepts related to the watercolor technique, followed by some exercises to loosen up your hand. Next, look for images to create a mood board that will work as your roadmap to creating your final illustration.

Create a sketch with pencils, and give it color. Then, start painting the background to establish depth to your drawing, and apply layers of color to your botanical elements. You will complete your illustration by working on the finishing touches and find out the best ways to share your work.

Once you have completed this course, you will have learned all you need to create your own botanical illustrations, using the negative watercolor technique.
