Jhoel Mamani’s mission is to awaken the viewer’s desire to create and believe in their own artistic potential, conveying the notion that any idea or dream can become a reality. Through his work, he communicates this concept using a visual foundation of painting. His style creates surreal scenarios full of forms related to the concept of death and life, always including hybrid species and crows.
In this course, Jhoel will teach you the tools, techniques and creative processes of surrealist oil painting so that you can create your own dreamlike characters and scenarios. You will learn the basics of volume and see how to develop a pictorial oil painting based your own personal interests, full of symbolism and imagination.
Description
You will start by meeting Jhoel, learn about his pictorial work and his passion for surrealism. He will explain this style, his artistic influences and what you are going to do during this course.
You will be introduced to the basics of semiotics and Jhoel will show you his method to freely and objectively create a character.
You will choose a theme and see how to conjure up and materialize its elements. Your main character will be a hybrid of those elements and you will experiment by mixing them together. The characters should have recognizable colors; during the construction of this surreal scenario and you need to think about how the theme relates to the main character.
You will see techniques and theoretical concepts that will help you better understand the drawing and volume. You will discover how to use the tools (brushes, oils, solvents ...) and you will educate your vision by identifying the different tonal scales; later, you will learn to draw with volume in monochrome practices.
You will start using color to create volume and get an understanding of the relationship between form and space in oil painting. Then, you will go one step further with volume, adding halftones, lights, shadows, reflections and spatial quality with tones and overlays.
You will learn the compositional guidelines in order to place elements according to size, tone and shape . Then Jhoel will help you make a coherent scenario, positioning the characters by volume.
Finally, you will apply what you have learned to your final project; starting with the scenario then moving on to your main character and main image with volume, completing your work with objects that provide rhythm and harmony.
