The designers and illustrators of Guacala Studio definitely get it with their characters that convey, according to their words, a mix between the grotesque and the fun, transporting us with their shapes and colors to the nineties.

In this course, Guacala Studio will show you the basic techniques to face a digital illustration project in which you will involve lettering , main characters, secondary and background, that you can mix to make different compositions and apply them in different formats You will go from the generation of ideas to the technical management of the archives for the production of cushions, stickers , posters or t-shirts, among others; going through the chromatic handling, the lighting, shadows, contours, volumes and visual effects for the development of different effects.

Combine characters, lettering and illustrated elements to create unique compositions from beginning to end

You will meet Sebastián and Andrés, or what is the same, Guacala Studio. They will tell you about their experience in the sector since they started 11 years ago, and they will show you some of their influences and references.

You will start learning to define a general concept that gives you many visual options between characters, phrases and elements. You will review and shortlist references for the project.

You will prepare an optimized resolution file in Adobe Photoshop, in which you will sketch various compositions with the elements you have chosen; you will select the one that has the greatest visual impact. Having the clear visual concept, you will outline in broad strokes the main character from basic geometries; then, you will gradually shaping it.

Next, you will select the secondary elements, the lettering and the background of your composition; you must rely on the initial composition, to generate these elements in an articulated way.

The guys from Guacala will show you how they give life to the secondary characters by adding a basic level of detail, they will continue with the letters created in a formal and conceptual way to the piece and will end with a background proposal that unifies the elements.

You will learn some tips to work optimally in Adobe Photoshop: how to configure the brush tool to obtain the right contour, how to add additional details that define the final appearance, or how to get the shadows in certain areas

You will start the coloring process by creating a color palette, adding additional shades and taking into account the contrast, saturation and texture. You will learn to add textures to the piece, using transparencies and volume. You will determine the areas that should be illuminated and how to add brightness. Finally, you will add final elements that will strengthen the personality of your illustration.

You will see how to prepare your illustrated project for different media, learning various techniques such as the screen technique, screen printing, stamping or digital printing. You will discover how to prepare these formats in Photoshop taking into account the production requirements.

Finally, you will learn how to create an animated GIF from your project in Photoshop, and you can export it to start sharing your piece.
