Artistic vision is shaped by learned perspectives and filters that we're often not even aware of. For painter Torsten Wolber, this realization became the key to carving out his personal portraiture technique. He approaches his art with confidence, without waiting around for a concrete result. His oil paintings can be found in private collections and galleries, as well as in publications such as Der Spiegel and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

In this course, he teaches you a new method for painting shape-oriented portraits using a photograph as a reference. With Torsten as your guide, discover how to express yourself freely and confidently, without losing sight of the bigger picture. Go beyond your limits and express your authentic style to open doors in the artistic world!

Description

Explore contemporary oil painting, unleash your creativity, and draw expressive portraits with an innovative technique

Torsten Wolber starts off by telling you a little about his work and career as a painter, then shows you some of his art and sources of inspiration.

He goes on to show you the materials needed as well as how to make and correctly prepare your canvases like a professional. Next, choose the color scheme and learn how to mix tones in a way that's really going to favor the overall aesthetic. Get straight to work on the first sketch in different shades of gray.

Devise your final project and explore how to choose the right image and how to compose a good drawing. Then paint on the canvas and use a ruler to create a faint grid that's not too noticeable. Highlight the proportions of the face by covering them with different colors, starting with the darker shades and gradually getting to the lighter ones.

To finish, refine some smaller details and tweak your painting even more to the likeness of the reference photo. Add power and expression to the portrait by simplifying some details, using expressive techniques, changing perspective, and eliminating some elements. Wrap up the course with some tips from Torsten on successfully finishing off each piece.
