Color and photography are two forms of visual communication with the power to connect the world of our imagination with the real world. Documentalist, photography director, photographer, and visual artist Carine Wallauer combines photo records with watercolor painting techniques which allow her to experiment with new emotions and play with different tones and textures in her art.

In this course, learn how to manually color black and white photos using traditional techniques. Join Carine and discover the history of manual coloring and create a three-photo narrative series combining realistic and experimental watercolor compositions.

Description

Learn how to manually add color to black and white photos using traditional photography-painting techniques

Start the course by meeting your teacher Carine Wallauer who tells you about her professional experience as a documentalist, art director, photographer, and visual artist. She shares who her main artistic influences are and goes over all the course content.

In the second unit, discover the history of manual photo coloring, understand the importance of color as a narrative element, and learn how to choose the right image for hand coloring. Carine shows you how to prepare your black and white photo in Adobe Photoshop and discusses the different printing materials and paper you’ll use throughout the course.

Before you start your project, prepare and organize your workspace to paint. First, experiment adding realistic colors to a portrait. Then, practice gradients by working with landscapes and nature images. Finally, complete your three-photo series combining the coloring techniques you’ve learned and create an experimental work of art.

In the last unit, Carine shows you how to scan and protect your physical pieces to ensure the colors don’t fade over time. She also shares some tips on how to physically reproduce your work in different formats and post them on social media.
