The process of creating fictional worlds for young readers to enjoy has two main aspects: the creative illustration phase and the editorial layout stage. Opening the imagination of children is what inspires illustrator Jimena Sarquiz to create eye-catching artwork for books and magazines. Her clients range from magazines to publishing houses, including Edebé, Edelvives, and Capstone Publishing.

In this course, she walks you through the entire process of creating magical illustrations for children’s editorial publications. Discover how to bring your images to life with a vibrant color palette, and how to position them in a layout ready for publishing. Send a meaningful message to young curious minds with words and images.

This is Jimena’s second course at Domestika. If you want to learn more about how to further develop your character illustrations, take a look at her previous course Creating Characters for Children’s Stories with Procreate.

Description

Inspire young minds by learning how to create magical illustrations for children’s publications with digital tools

Begin by getting to know Jimena. She talks you through her creative journey, which led her to the world of illustration, from a passion that started in her childhood to a profession in the world of children’s publication. Hear about the artists she admires and the works that have shaped her style.

Get an overview of the different fields of illustration and how they apply to children’s illustration in particular. Take a look at an example illustration brief before exploring layout and how to plan your publication accordingly. Discover how to work with text to complement your illustration and add a meaningful message to its story. Jimena then shares tips on what to keep in mind when beginning a publication project for a client.

Start your project by prepping your work file in Procreate and selecting the correct settings. Then start working on some rough sketches before choosing your favorite thumbnail. Jimena guides you through the process of developing your sketch by refining your images and incorporating text.

Review some color theory before learning to work with a limited palette. Jimena shows you how to work with three grayscale tones to help achieve contrast and clarity in your images. Next, add color to your black and white image while exploring Procreate’s color tools like alpha locking and gradient maps. Then learn how to use halftones to digitally simulate printing techniques that give your image a textured look.

Wrap up the course by saving your document in the correct format, ready to be shared with your client. Jimena then shares her tips and tricks on building a portfolio and how to make your work attractive to clients.
