If you are passionate about pop culture and all things vintage, you will love discovering how to apply this unique style to your advertising projects. Illustrator and character designer Ed Vill found classic cartoons to be a never-ending source of history, comedy, and social criticism capable of transmitting the identity of just about any brand.

This course is complementary to Introduction to the Creation of Cartoon-Style Characters, Ed’s first course on Domestika, in which the basic notions of this technique are presented. This course will help you take the next step, showing you how to use Procreate and the Apple Pencil to get the most out of your illustrations no matter the media.

Description

Learn how to create a character for brands starting from a pencil sketch right up to the digital illustration

Get to know your teacher, Ed Vill, by going through the highlights of his long professional career. Learn about how Ed was blown away after discovering the infinite creative possibilities working with Procreate can offer. Take a trip through Ed’s many sources of inspiration, from the animated ads of the 1950s to the precision details of Walt Disney.

Next, define what kind of character you’ll be creating in three steps. First, carry out an analysis of a brand to define what key characteristics will be reflected in your cartoon. Second, study your character’s personality through four sketches performing different poses and activities. Finally, create a mood board on Pinterest to gather inspiration from various sources.

Once you have finished the final sketch, immerse yourself in the world of Procreate and discover the powerful features of the Apple Pencil. The final step is digitizing your sketch and exporting it with the appropriate extensions so you can apply it to a wide range of digital and print media.
