Loom weaving is an act of introspection and personal dialogue, to be undertaken calmly and carefully. For textile artist Laura Elliott, it's an opportunity to tell the stories that inspire her through the colors, wefts, and textures of her rugs.
In this course, she teaches you tapestry techniques for weaving rugs that tell tales of nature and magical legends. Your teacher accompanies you through each step of the creative process, from your search for references and making a sketch, to preparing the warp and your project's finishing touches.
Description
Begin by getting to know Laura Elliott and take a look at some of her tapestries. She tells about how she discovered the world of rugs and shows you some artists she admires and who have inspired her work.
Continue with an introduction to the materials required for your project. Laura then guides you in the decision-making process behind your sketch, from your search for inspiration to choosing a color palette that works with the design.
Learn how to prepare your warp and get to weaving your rug. Start with the vertical stripes, move on to the first curved figure, and then work towards the overlapping figures. Now you've got the skills to weave any shape and create beautiful color combinations.
To wrap up, Laura shows you how to finish the rug before taking it off the warp and demonstrates how to hide all the threads at the back. She also explains what fabrics to put on the back to avoid dirt sticking to the material, as well as how to wash and care for your rug.
