For sisters Laura and Ana María Maya Silva, the process of transforming metal into jewelry is nothing short of magic. Since launching their brand VATTEA in 2016, the pair has been researching new techniques and exploring different materials to create handcrafted accessories rich in detail.
In this course, learn how to design and craft metal jewelry without soldering or using a torch. Experiment with methods such as chemical engraving and hand-cutting and discover everything you need to bring your first jewelry collection to life.
Description
To begin, Laura and Ana María Maya tell you about who they are, what they do, and what inspires them, and then encourage you to do the same. They also explain the final project and how you can use what you're passionate about and what inspires you as references for your collection.
Get acquainted with the materials and tools you need to craft jewelry and see how to set up your workspace. Compile ideas for your collection into a mood board and draw your first sketches. Once you've chosen the definitive designs, create stencils for your pieces according to the sizes and shapes you want.
Now it's time to cut out your pieces following the stencils. Learn how to work with a jigsaw and a coping saw and adjust the blade for more precise cuts. Then, give your creations a personal touch by using engraving techniques to add different textures and finishes to your collection.
Finally, Laura, and Ana show you how to finish your jewelry pieces and assemble them to create more elaborate designs. They also show you how to polish and shine your pieces to give them flawless finish. To round out your jewelry-making experience, explore other materials to enhance your designs and let your imagination soar.
