Icons are small design elements, but they can have a huge impact as a functional element. For a designer, it means reducing a large amount of information to its minimum expression, without a doubt, a great challenge. The art director and specialist in branding Hermes Mazali, is passionate about icons and always tries to combine his brand projects with iconographies.

In this course, Hermes will teach you the methodology to create your own family of icons. You will understand the advantages of using a grid in your sketches and designs. You will also learn to plan your project, from concept to export of icons for different media.

Description

Learn the process and techniques to do any iconographic branding job

Hermes will introduce himself and explain more about his career as a graphic designer, his tastes and specialties within the area. He will also talk to you about what and who inspires him to create.

You will discover where the iconography comes from and how its evolution went to what we know today. You will also see what the icons really are and how they differ from the pictograms. You will explore the different types of icons and the most common style variations and then, you will know the considerations that you must take into account according to the medium for which you design, digital or printed.

You will start the conceptual process of your project (the signaling and iconography of a specific space). You will define the objectives and plan it by working in three phases: definition, development and verification. You will make a concept map and create a visual moodboard .

You will continue with the design and production process, creating your first sketches on paper. Once the first icons are defined, you will see how to respect proportions, concepts and achieve consistency between them. When you have the icon family, you will apply the color by learning to take advantage of Illustrator's color swatches.

You will finalize your designs and learn to adapt them depending on the support, to finally see how to export your designs to different resolutions and formats.
