Crochet gives you the freedom to make any garment you want using a single piece of yarn; all you need is a little bit of patience. Crochet artist Katie Jones runs her own crochet brand alongside her mother where she sells her patterns online. Her work has been featured at the V&A as well as in publications including The Telegraph and The Guardian.
In this course, Katie teaches you the fundamental techniques and essential skills needed for crochet. Learn how to make your own sweater following the granny square technique step by step and make something beautiful from nothing. Happy hooking!
Description
Begin the course by getting to know Katie. She talks about how her love for crochet kickstarted her career in fashion. Then she dives into the influences which inspire her work, from artists to books.
Get an introduction to granny square and how the technique was developed. Discover the tools needed for the course before diving into the skills needed for crocheting. Katie guides you through all the basic crochet stitches; the slip stitch, chain stitch, double crochet, and treble crochet. Then make your first basic color granny square.
Gather design inspiration for your sweater. Learn how to pick a color palette and plan the fit and feel of it based on yarn choice. Build on your knowledge of granny square by introducing multiple colors and working on a graphic spot square. Katie then shows you how to sew in your ends to give your squares a clean and secure finish.
Use the skills learned so far to create your sweater! Start by planning your garment, taking into consideration things like tension and yarn calculation. Create the body of your sweater from the squares produced earlier in the course. Then, learn how to create a customized head hole for the perfect fit. Katie demonstrates how to finish your piece with a double crochet edge. Discover what “blocking” is and how to add the finishing touches to your piece.
Explore how to care for your garment, including the best way to wash and store it for longevity. To finish the course, Katie shares her advice for posting your work on social media and engaging with the online crochet community.
