The unpredictable shapes and vibrant colors of nature give off a sense of joy and life. This is where Catalina Cumsille, graphic designer and renowned ceramic artist, looks for inspiration when designing illustrations to decorate her artwork.
In this course, learn how to create illustrations on ceramics. Replace the traditional canvas with ceramic and use the underglaze technique to cover it with your own rich, colorful designs.
Description
Start by meeting your teacher Catalina, who welcomes you to the course with a brief introduction explaining how she got started in ceramics and what inspires her to create. She also shows you some of her first projects to demonstrate how her work has evolved.
In the next unit, learn everything from A to Z about ceramics including the different types of pastes that exist and techniques to work with it. Practice painting basic strokes on paper with watercolors to help you recreate your illustrations on ceramic.
Now it's time to start working on your tea set. First, create a mood board to help you decide on a color palette and what elements you want to include in your design. Draw a sketch and transfer it to your bisque adding slight changes to make every piece unique. Then, Catalina teaches you how to apply your designs using the underglaze technique and experiment with different tones and textures. Finally, learn how to glaze your work.
To finish the course, Catalina gives you some tips on the firing process and how to safely transport your pieces to a kiln. She also shares some advice on how to care for your custom tea set so you can enjoy it for years to come.
