Description

Discover how to add threads and textures to a piece of wood to create a unique work of art, from drilling to stitching and hanging

Meet graphic designer and fiber artist Sara Pastrana. She talks about how she developed her niche and came to start making embroidery pieces on wood. She also discusses who and what have influenced her work.

Familiarize yourself with the equipment for the course, from needles and threads to your rotary tool, then set up a safe workspace for drilling. See how Sara finds inspiration and hear tips on how you can find your own. Learn how to plan your holes and stitches for different elements, then work on a sample to practice both drilling and stitch techniques.

Design your symmetrical motif using either digital or analog methods, planning the placement and type of each of your stitches. Select your color palette with Sara’s advice on contrasting and complementary shades. Then transfer your design to the wood slice by attaching your paper pattern.

Using the techniques learned earlier in the course, drill all the holes for your final design with the paper template as a guide. Time to start embroidering as Sara teaches you various techniques for seamless transitions, securing your threads, creativing curves, and more.

See how to neatly cover the back of your piece and hear Sara’s tips on maintaining and protecting it. Discover how to attach cord for hanging your artwork, and explore various ways you can enhance and embellish wood embroidery designs for future projects. End the course by hearing how to photograph your art to share on social media.
