Description

Learn the main techniques for handweaving on a frame loom and create a wall tapestry inspired by a contemporary work of art

Meet your teacher Ilary Bottini. She tells you about her professional career and how, after a decade working in communication, she decided to open her own textile design studio. She also talks about the artists and designers who have influenced her creative style and who brought innovation to the rug and tapestry weaving world.

Begin with an introduction to the main tools you need to start weaving and complete your final project. Discover what materials are commonly used for the warp and weft and how to choose them, as well as the different effects each one creates on the loom. Then, learn how to differentiate between frame looms and build your own.

Now it's time to get weaving! Ilary walks you through the basic techniques and shows you how to create simple geometric shapes and eye-catching designs inspired by everyday objects.

Next, create a sketch of your final design based on a cubist work of art. Transfer your design to card stock to act as a guide for your tapestry. Using a marker, trace your design onto the warp and then start weaving. Once you're done, add some fringe on the bottom, cut your tapestry from the loom, and move it to a new frame for the finishing touches.

Finally, Ilary shares some tips to help you avoid common mistakes while weaving. She ties everything together by showing you how to photograph your work with a unique style to make it stand out on Instagram and Pinterest.
