Although they say “never judge a book by its cover”, a great book cover design has the power to lock the eyes of the viewer while sitting on a shelf. For award-winning graphic designer Chip Kidd, designing a book cover is about figuring out what a story should look like. With widely recognized cover designs like the iconic Jurassic Park dinosaur skeleton design, for authors like Haruki Murakami, as well as several covers for the Rolling Stone Magazine, Chip has been creating iconic designs for more than three decades.

As someone who doesn’t consider himself much of a sketch artist, Chip is known for his ability to combine conceptual thinking and problem-solving to bring visually striking designs to life. In this course, he teaches you his method to create compelling designs that both invite exploration and encapsulate a story— without the need for drawing.

Description

Learn to design a book cover that invites exploration, interaction, and touch by using both physical artwork and InDesign

Meet Chip Kidd, the designer behind countless Marvel and DC Comics book covers, and your teacher for this course. He shares his creative journey, who he is, and how he came to be. Hear about the designers and the work that have greatly influenced Chip.

Next, Chip shows you his methodology when approaching a design brief. As a graphic designer, Chip believes that his job is to solve a client’s problem. He shows you how to define the problem by digging into the source material and establishing its emotional appeal, intention, and minimalist design. Explore the different components to consider like a cover’s form, composition, and content, and define the parameters of the project.

Then it's time to start on the solution. Chip takes you step by step through the process of developing multiple concepts and prototypes using materials like spray paint and stencils, or your art supplies of choice. Learn how to finalize the prototypes using Photoshop and InDesign. Next, Chip shows you his method for choosing the winning option by analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Discover how you can broaden your portfolio by creating a theme and expanding your designs. Chip shares with you his tips on how to make a winning portfolio and how to share your work. Wrap up the course by hearing his advice on how to find graphic design work by seeing what potential clients look for in a portfolio.
