Have you ever considered using engraving techniques to illustrate ceramics? Using his own unique method, award-winning visual artist Samuel Casal, who's collaborated with brands like Nike, Companhia das Letras, and Rede Globo, transforms ordinary everyday ceramics into works of art.
In this course, learn how to use scratch art techniques to illustrate ceramics. Samuel guides you through the creative process, from making the initial negative, to the scratch art with drypoint tools and scalpels. By the end, you'll have a piece ready to glaze and fire for impressive results.
Description
Get to know Samuel Casal as he talks about how he created this unique method through experimentation and exploration of new techniques. He also shares his biggest influences, both contemporary and ancient.
Begin by selecting a ceramic piece to work with and study the main characteristics. Samuel shows you what tools you need for your final project and helps you choose a theme for your illustration. Discover how to draw your negative, starting with the light and moving onto the shadow. Also see how to create volume with hatching.
Then prepare your ceramic piece and paint the silhouette of your design before adding some rough outlines for reference. Now it's time to immerse yourself in the scratch art technique using drypoint tools. Draw by removing the underglaze to create contrast and add detail to your illustration through hatching using scalpels with more rounded edges.
To round out the course, Samuel teaches you to dust off your piece and clean any marks or prints left by handling. Your piece is now ready for the final glaze before going into the kiln.
